Jersey Information - The Bailiwick Jersey
The Bailiwick of Jersey is part of the Channel Islands, which sits in the Bay of St. Malo, off the coast of north-west France, and some 85 miles from the south coast of England. It comprises of Jersey, with a population of around 98,000, and includes two groups of small islands that are no longer permanently inhabited, the Minquiers, and Écréhous, and the reef groups Les Pierres de Lecq and Les Dirouilles.
Jersey covers an area of just over 45.5 square miles. Jerser is the biggest of the Channel Islands. The lowest point in the island is the Atlantic Ocean, and the highest is Les Platons, at 136 metres. The island is divided into 12 parishes, detailed in the section About Jersey. The islands are part of the British Isles, but not part of the United Kingdom. The Lieutenant Governor is Her Majesty’s personal representative and official channel of communication between the Crown, the UK Government and the Bailiwick. General Sir John Chalmers McColl is the current Lieutenant Governor of Jersey. He was sworn in on 26 September 2011. He was formerly Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Jersey is the mostly southerly of the Channel Islands and has one of the best sunshine records in the British Isles. Warmed by the nearby Gulf Stream, summer temperatures average 20 degrees centigrade.
