Jersey Facts
Jersey first regular postal services began at the end of the 18th century. It became more reliable with the advent of steam ships and in 1852 St Helier was the first place in the British Isles to have street letter boxes.
Ancient Jersey land measures are called ‘vergee’ and ‘perch’ which are still used today. There are approximately 2¼ verges to one acre.
It is believed Nomadic hunters first lived In Jersey around 250,000 years ago, when the island was part of the continent.
Until the 1930’s Jersey could only be reached by boat. The first aeroplanes used to land on the sand in St Aubin’s Bay and times their arrival for low tide. The airport opened in 1937.
A Royal Refugee - for a few months in 1646, the Prince of Wales, the future Charles II, sought refuge in Jersey. He was lodged in the Governor’s House at Elizabeth Castle .After the execution of Charles I in 1649 Jersey was the first place to proclaim his son King.
The Jersey battle of Flowers celebrated its centenary in 2002. The first celebration was held for the Coronation of King Edward VII and is held each year in August.
Ariadene is the world’s largest steam clock; located a short walk from the Jersey Maritime Museum. It was built to commemorate one of the first steam ships to sail between England and the Channel Islands.
Two types of police force operate in Jersey.
States Police – The uniformed police appeared in 1853 but operated only in the parish of St Helier. In 1952 a professional police force was constituted with powers, which were extended in 1974, to serve the whole island.
Honorary Police – Each parish has its own honorary police force made up of centeniers, vingteniers and constable’s officers. They are elected to serve a three-year term. The Attorney General is head of the honorary police. The honorary police have their origins in the Middle Ages which makes them among the oldest law-enforcement bodies in the world.
